JOURNAL #2: Is It Okay to Break Up With Someone Via Text Message?

I do not believe it is acceptable to break up with someone through any form of technology, whether it's through text, a phone call or an online message. Breakup's should be done in person face to face. If you are going to break up with someone you should at the very least see the person and show them you respect them. When you are in a relationship with someone the two of you should have some level of respect for each other, and I only feel that it is right to live up to that and break up in person. Texting is a form of getting a message to someone quickly and easily and if you use it as a form to break up, it may hurt the other person. Breaking up over a text message implies that you dont care as much because you wanted it to be quick and easy.

However, in class some students brought up some very interesting points where it would be okay to break up with someone through a text. I do think that to some degree it is alright to break up with someone via text message if that person you are going to break up with did something that betrayed your trust, such as cheat, hid something from you or perhaps lied about something. Personally, I still think the best way to break up is face to face but if the other person showed that level of disrespect to you by cheating, then maybe he or she should have a taste of what it's like to be betrayed of trust and respect. Another perspective someone brought up in class was being in a long distance relationship. If you're in a long distance relationship then I feel it is acceptable to break up over a computer or phone screen, though it would be much more respectful if it were done over something like skype so the two of you could discuss and talk over things rather than just type or text.
